Born shortly after his parents immigrated from Cuba, Pedro started his journalism career in Miami and made his way to The Arizona Republic in Phoenix before landing a job at ESPN in 2003. As an integral part of the Arizona media scene, Pedro was invited on an ongoing basis to speak at Arizona State’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in downtown Phoenix. Pedro valued his time with students and considered a future as a professor at Cronkite after his journalism career ended.
The Pedro Gomez Foundation is proud to partner with the Cronkite School for undergraduate students earning a degree in sports journalism. The foundation has provided an annual endowed scholarship since 2022, with a total of three young journalism students receiving the honor. We hope to continue creating more scholarships in the future to help more young students on their educational journey to becoming journalists. The Cronkite School is considered one of the nation’s top journalism schools offering programs in digital media, broadcast news, sports reporting, media innovation, public relations, digital marketing, Spanish-language news and more.
